Small-town memories are easy to overlook until they are gone. Voices of Keenesburg grew out of the work of the Keenesburg Historic Preservation Commission and the simple desire to make sure neighbors’ stories, photos, and everyday moments are not lost.
This project exists because front-porch conversations, grain-elevator shifts, school events, and quiet acts of community kindness all add up to the history of this place. By gathering and sharing these memories, we honor the people who built Keenesburg and create a record that future generations can see, hear, and feel as if they were here.

Our mission is to preserve and share the voices, photos, and memories of Keenesburg so that anyone can explore where we have come from and how our town has changed over time.
We work to record oral history interviews, collect and digitize photographs and documents, and make these materials accessible to the public in ways that are respectful, accurate, and welcoming to the whole community.

We imagine a future where anyone, from a grandchild down the road to a researcher across the country, can hear the voices and see the faces that shaped Keenesburg.
Our core values guide how we collect and share history:
Our core values guide how we collect and share history:
- Respect: We treat every story and storyteller with care, dignity, and gratitude.
- Accuracy: We do our best to document details clearly and note what is memory, what is record, and where questions remain.
- Inclusion: We welcome stories from all parts of the community, across generations, backgrounds, and experiences.
- Community ownership: We believe Keenesburg’s history belongs to the people who live it, not just to experts or institutions.
- Intergenerational connection: We look for ways to bring elders, youth, and everyone in between into conversation with one another.
Voices of Keenesburg and the Keenesburg Historic Preservation Commission serve anyone who cares about this place and its people.
That includes current and former residents who want to see their stories reflected, families tracing their roots, students and teachers looking for local examples to bring lessons to life, and visitors or researchers interested in rural Colorado history. Whether you lived here for one season or for a lifetime, your piece of the story matters.

This project is only possible because people are willing to share what they remember and what they have saved.
You can help by sitting down for an oral history interview, lending photos or documents for scanning, suggesting a person or place we should record, or volunteering your time at events or behind the scenes.
